National Education Day is celebrated on November 11 every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India. Azad served as the education minister from 15 August 1947 until 2 February 1958.
National Education Day aims to remember Azad’s contribution in laying the foundations of the education system in the country after independence. Under his leadership, the Ministry of Education established the first Indian Institute of Technology in 1951 and the University Grants Commission in 1953.
Azad was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1992. He is commonly remembered as Maulana Azad.
The day was declared by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in September 2008.
“Educationists should build the capacities of the spirit of inquiry, creativity, entrepreneurial and moral leadership among students and become their role model.” – Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
